Bishop David Edward Foley 1930-2018, 3rd Bishop of Birmingham, Alabama

This is a link the obituary of Bishop David Edward Foley from the Diocese of Birmingham website.

One thing that the obituary does not mention is that Bishop Foley was a great friend of the Traditional Latin Mass community.

On the first Sunday in Lent Bishop Foley celebrated a Traditional Latin Mass at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church.  After Mass, as he was about the leave the church, he promised that, if he is still alive, he would be back on Easter Sunday.  In his sermon he pointed out that one of the things we are supposed to do during Lent is to be more generous to the poor.  Following up on something written by Pope Benedict XIV, he posed the question:  “Who is the poorest person you know?”  Bishop Foley’s answer was: “The person most in need of your forgiveness.”

De profundis clamavi ad te Domine
Domine exaudi vocem meam fiant aures tuae intendentes in vocem deprecationis meae
Si iniquitates observabis Domine Domine quis sustinebit
Quia apud te propitiatio est propter legem tuam sustinui te Domine sustinuit anima mea in verbum eius
Speravit anima mea in Domino
A custodia matutina usque ad noctem speret Israel in Domino
Quia apud Dominum misericordia et copiosa apud eum redemptio
Et ipse redimet Israel ex omnibus iniquitatibus eius

Traditional Latin Masses in Tuscaloosa

There will be no more Traditional Latin Masses in Tuscaloosa until sometime this fall.  We had planned for the last Mass this academic year to be April 29, but because of the illness and passing of Bishop David Foley and other unforeseen circumstances no priest is available the last two Sundays in April.

Ash Wednesday services at our Traditional Mass sites.

According to the February calendar from Our Lady Help of Christians in Huntsville, there will be Masses at 9 AM and 5:30 PM at OLHC. Ashes will be distributed at both Masses.
At Blessed Sacrament in Birmingham there is the regularly scheduled Latin Mass at 7 AM plus another Latin Mass at 6 PM.
I have no information about Christ the King Abbey in Cullman.
